January 26 marked the one-year anniversary of the house arrest of the presidential rivals of Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinezhad. Shirin Ebadi, in conjunction with her fellow Laureates of the Nobel Women’s Initiative, released a statement calling for their release:
“The presidential rivals of Mr Ahmadinezhad, Messrs Musavi and Karrubi, and Mr Musavi’s wife, Mrs Zahra Rahnavard, have been under house arrest for over a year without trial or possibility of defence and in contravention of Iranian national law and human rights norms.
