Humanitarian News at 2 Tweets per hour

Want to follow updates of Humanitarian News but at a slower speed than usual? For you, I created several new Twitter accounts, broadcasting updates at 2 tph (Tweets per Hour)

What's new on Humanitarian News?

While the news is fed automatically into Humanitarian News, I am continuously improving and expanding the site, and its feeds. Here are the latest updates and changes on Humanitarian News.
New functionality is marked with

August 11 2010:
I created different Twitter accounts, broadcasting updates in a lower volume.

June 26 2010:
[[grumpy face]] Victims of our own success? The Humanitarian News web servers finally failed under the increased load of its visitors. We've had many problems in the past weeks including a corrupt post database, funny characters being displayed in posts, disallowing users to see ANY post, and general service outages. Beh.
I am trying to find solutions, but for the time being, I had to disable the internal search and the RSS function on the search ("Opensearch") which were just too heavy on the server.
Use the Google Search in the left margin!

June 20 2010:
I added a long list of excellent new sites to the source list. Humanitarian News now retrieves the last articles from 1,035 different sources.
As the built-in search is often slow, I added a Google Search in the left margin.

June 10 2010:
FINALLY I found and solved the bug in the search, which no longer returned the most recent results first. That bug also resulted in the RSS feeds on searches (OPENSEARCH) no longer returning recent posts.
SOLVED! (thanks Emanuele!)

May 16 2010:
A while ago, I enabled a feature for users at the bottom of the post how many times a post was read. It also enabled me to show the daily most read posts at the bottom of each page. Unfortunately that seems to slow down the site too much, so I had to disable it.
The site should load faster now.

May 12 2010:
- The site was hacked again on May 12, but the problem was cured within a few hours.

May 5 2010:
- The site was hacked again on May 1, but the problem was cured within a few hours.
- I also changed the way new articles are imported, to ensure the site is updated faster. As stands at the moment, every 10 minutes, over 850 sources are polled for updates.

April 25 2010:
The site was hacked last night, and the home page was redirected to another website. All was repaired. If you experience any erratic behaviour, please email me.

Jan 18 2010:
I changed the search settings, so the most recent articles will appear first.

Jan 10 2010:
At the bottom of each article, you can now see how many times it was read.
- I now keep track of the number of articles we collect, and publish them in a monthly updated file.
- over 100 new blogs and websites have been added to the feeds.

Dec 26 2009:
Humanitarian News got a new layout and finally starts to resemble "a real webpage". As of now, I also highlight "featured articles" (in the grey boxes) and "site highlights" (in the red boxes).

Dec 18 2009:
I updated the feeds & subscriptions section with a description how to create Email alerts only for the latest posts of your interest.

Dec 14 2009:
I rationalized all URLs on this site:
aidnews is now: www.humanitariannews.org/aidnews with the RSS: /aidnews/feed
aidworker blogs: www.humanitariannews.org/aidworkerblogs with RSS: /aidworkerblogs/feed
nonprofitnews: www.humanitariannews.org/nonprofitnews with RSS: /nonprofitnews/feed
nonprofitblogs: www.humanitariannews.org/nonprofitblogs with RSS: /nonprofitblogs/feed
greennews: www.humanitariannews.org/greennews with RSS: /greennews/feed
the overall RSS feed is now www.humanitariannews.org/feed
all new posts now have the format "/date/title" instead of "/blog/date/title"
For consistency's sake, I retained all old URLs

Dec 6 2009:
About 50 new NonProfitBlogs were added in the past month. AidNews, AidBlogs, GreenNews sources were updated too.

Oct 28 2009:
I modified the search algorithm to show the most recent articles show first, rather than the articles which contain the keyword the most.

Oct 25 2009:
- Added a dozen new sources to NonProfitBlogs, and Green News.
- A problem caused the site to update only every few hours at peak times. Is now solved.

Oct 20 2009:
You can now generate your own RSS feed based on your search criteria! Check out the explanation on the "Subscriptions" page

Oct 12 2009:
Do you have a blog or website? I made some News widgets to display the latest updates of Humanitarian News on your site.

Oct 6 2009:
- Added a dozen more nonprofit blogs. A total of 345 nonprofit blog feeds are now imported into Humanitarian News.
- There was a problem with the URLs pointing to pages which had non-readable characters, generating "Page not found" errors. Is solved now.

Oct 2 2009:
September was the first full month Humanitarian News was active. In our first month, we fetched and stored 13,000 articles from +- 600 different nonprofit sources.

Sept 19 2009:
- In the past week, I added more sources for Green News (+20), Nonprofit Blogs (+50), Aidworkers (+4) and Aidnews (+3).
- I tuned the input fetcher for new articles. The site now gets updated every 30 15 minutes.

Sept 13 2009:
I added more sources for Green News. A total of 60 different feeds are now imported for the latest on the environment.

Sept 12 2009:
We now feature selective RSS feeds and Email subscriptions.

Sept 11 2009:
- The excessive '404 Page Not Found' errors should be solved now. Each time a feed was updated, a new URL was created and the old one was deleted. (ooops)
- All posts as of today should have correct URLs, errors might still occur when trying to access posts published before Sept 11 2009.
